Book Sections in the LRC

Books in my library are organized into 6 main sections and a few smaller sections.
I have included many items to download if you are looking to create your own shelf markers.
Directions are on the bottom right-hand side of this page.

Books Bins on the bottom of the shelves hold popular collections which are changed throughout the year.
Book Bin Signs
Easy Nonfiction  ( for grades K-2)
(Call number E + adjusted dewey number)

This section was created because the tiny books were getting lost in the regular nonfiction section. Now it is easy to find readable nonfiction books!
Books are coded with the first 3 numbers and sometimes the first dewey number is included. We are not to picky about shelving this area. Fish books go with fish books, dogs with dogs, and so on.
Shelf markers were created to highlight main nonfiction book sections.

Easy Chapter Books/ Easy Readers
(Call number : RED / YELLOW / BLUE - depending on level of book)

This section was created because the easy readers were getting lost in the regular picture book section. Now it is easy for the students to find readable books at their reading levels!

Books are separated into 3 different colored baskets according to their guided reading level. I believe that beginning readers should be reading books at their levels, so I have arranged the books in the following sections:
Red Baskets: Guided Reading Levels A-E
Yellow Baskets: Guided Reading Levels F-J
Blue Baskets: Guided Reading Levels K-M

All students and teachers using my library know that this system is just another tool. Books are leveled as an approximate level, and grouped together accordingly.

A-Z Shelf Markers - Capital Letters
Author Boxes
Creating Shelf Markers:
Print out the labels for the boxes, laminate, and tape onto the side of the box!

Boxes were ordered from Uline.  You can use white boxes or brown boxes.
I used the 1”-1 1/2” Ring Binder Boxes for the picture books size.
I used the Digest Size Book for the Fiction section.
(The boxes are measured for the inside of the boxes, not the outside, so be aware of this when ordering. )
